Thursday, December 25, 1777 — Valley Forge, Pennsylvania

Today is Christmas. The temperatures are cold. We are not sixty miles from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. We have been told in these hills of Valley Forge there is no room for us. I see the stars out this evening. I remember that night when Mary and Joseph reached another Bethlehem. Shepherds were out in the fields keeping watch over their flocks by night. They looked up at the stars too. What they heard was good news of great joy that would be for all people. I am alone on this hill near the Schuylkill with my thoughts and a small fire that I have built. I told my military family that I needed solitary time to think. At the present, I cannot leave this hill this evening. I am wanting, longing, praying that angels might appear to me this evening with some good news of great joy. No sooner do I write this by this quaint fireside, I feel a conviction creep in, a whisper addressing me, “Has God not already given me what I needed most?” That is right. A Savior. Again, “Has God not brought you through so many tough times already?” Well yes, He has. The last question, “Do you think He will not do the same in this and the things to come?” Well, yes, I know God does not change. So, what should I do? I know the answer. Trust Him and push forward. Wait on Him and in due time, He will deliver. He always has.

A peace has consumed me. This Christmas has special meaning. I can now relate to that evening almost two thousand years ago, that blessed event. In our depredations and struggles, tonight I feel myself truly finding a calm. The night is silent as the fire crackles. The night is a holy night for me.
